Movies Serendipity and An Affair to Remember :: Serendipity Affair Movie Film Essays

Movies Serendipity and An Affair to Remember Can once in a lifetime happen twice? Can two people get a second chance at love? While reality more than likely suggests no, some movies would suggest otherwise. The films An Affair to Remember and Serendipity are only two examples of how society depicts romance as an exaggerated fabrication of reality only to have a negative effect on its viewers. Both films share the storyline of two lovers who separate, only hoping that fate will bring them back together As the film Serendipity begins, Sara Thomas and Jonathon Trager meet each other for the first time at Bloomingdale’s. Conversation sparked between the two when both reached for the same pair of gloves. Enjoying themselves at Bloomingdales, Sara and Jonathon decide to further their discussion at a nearby restaurant called Serendipity. Here, Jonathon realizes that he wants to see Sara again and politely asks for her phone number. Instead of just handing her number over, Sara writes in down on the inside cover of book, which she then tells him that she will sell the next day at a used bookstore. She continues to explain to Jonathon that if they are truly meant to see each other again, the book will find him. Jonathon then opens his wallet to take out a dollar bill. He writes his phone number on it and gives it to Sara, who spends it immediately. Using the same logic as before, she tells him that the dollar bill will find it’s way to her. As the years pass, the two both go on living their lives. But, Sara and Jonathon can’t seem to shake the feeling of each other. Every time Sara has a dollar bill, she always looks for a phone number and Jonathon can’t count all the used bookstores he’s been to. They both eventually meet someone new and become engaged. They wonder if these people they plan on marrying are their true soul mates. The night of Jonathon’s wedding rehearsal, he fiancà © gives him a present. Opening it slowly, he comes to realize it’s the title of the book Sara had once written her phone number in. He opens the front cover and he reads Sara’s name and number. Meanwhile, Sara is on an airplane returning home from visiting a friend. Pulling out her wallet, she discovers that she doesn’t have her wallet, but she has mistakenly taken her friend’s. Native American Contribution to American Culture Essay

One of the most neglected aspects of early American history is the part that native peoples played in its culture, development and institutions. With out the natives, English settlers could not have survived the new land. While trading their metal tools and other goods, the natives gave them food supplies for the English to survive. At times the Indians showed generosity in providing gifts of food to the colony. On other occasions, encounters between the colonists and the tribes turned violent, and the Native Americans occasionally killed colonists who strayed alone outside the fort. (http://www. britannica. com/eb/article-247837/Jamestown-Colony#849030. hook) In fact the dependency on food that the English settlers had was so great that Captain John Smith ordered that those who did not work, would not eat. No settler went hungry and died under his rule. Finally, the Indians taught the new settlers how to plan crops and feed themselves off the land. This was the first step toward the help received by the Native Americans and their influence on America. They helped settlers grow corn, pumpkin, squash and many other things including that of tobacco. The tobacco industry was explosive in America. Tobacco was the first crop grown for money in North America. In 1612 the settlers of the first American colony in Jamestown, Virginia grew tobacco as a cash crop. It was their main source of money. Other cash crops were corn, cotton, wheat, sugar, and soybeans (Indians taught them how to plant them). Tobacco helped pay for the American Revolution against England. Also, the first President of the U. S. grew tobacco. (http://healthliteracy. worlded. org/docs/tobacco/Unit1/2history_of. html). The fur trade was a big connection that most of the Indian tribes had with white settlers. In fact, it because a problem amongst the natives hence much of the fur was traded for guns, white supplies, and whiskey. Starting in 1790, the federal government tried to regulate the Indian fur trade and the use of alcohol through a series of Trade and Intercourse Acts. (http://www. mountainsofstone. com/) Many settlers brought diseases with them as well that the natives could not cure or were not immune to. The new Americans moves out west once the government started selling the land. This land turned to expansion and exploration, which happened to be Indian lands. There was much bartering and selling land from the Indians but expansion also resulted in great suffering, destruction, and cultural loss for the Native Americans of North America. (http://encarta. msn. com/encyclopedia_761589809/Westward_Movement. html) They started developing settler’s ways and culture because it was forced on them by the millions of new settlers coming out west and trampling everything in their path. Native Americans, even today, fight to keep their past and culture alive.

The Iron Triangle For Healthcare - 1320 Words

The Iron triangle for healthcare consists of cost, quality, and access; these three characteristics when balanced create great healthcare. Managed Care Organizations combine the three to offer consumers with care that is appropriate for their individual needs. Our book describes managed care organizations as â€Å"the cost management of healthcare services by controlling who the consumer sees and how much the service cost† (Basics of the U.S Healthcare System, Niles). Taking a look at the history prior to the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 (HMO ACT of 1973) the implementation has been significant in balancing cost, and quality control. Before this Act was signed in to law by President Nixon healthcare costs were determined by fee for service. A fee for service or indemnity plan is a plan that allows the provider to determine the cost of service, this fee for service plan caused for healthcare costs to increase rapidly. An example of this would be going to the do ctor with neck pain, being told to stretch then receiving a bill for 25,000 dollars. As could be understood the cost of healthcare had became a problem. A part of the problem of cost was the establishment of â€Å"free† healthcare for those eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, between 1965 and 1971 where there was no limitation on benefits. The cost of healthcare increased from 39 billion in 1965 to 75 billion in 1971.
